On Monday, May 31, the Region of Durham hosted a “safety-first” bike to work day event at Regional Headquarters. Across Durham, Regional employees donned helmets and bike bands and cycled to work that day. A total of 45 employees checked in with Smart Commute Durham staff to receive their bike to work T-shirts.
Participants were invited to participate in a “learn at lunch” workshop hosted by Constable Fraser Wannop of Durham Region Police Services. Constable Wannop oversees bike safety training for police staff.
Cyclists also tried out the new bike racks on a Durham Region Transit bus. The entire DRT fleet is now equipped with bike racks to allow commuters more flexibility.
Clean Air Commute June 14 to 18.
Clean air is great for everyone! What better way to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions than to carpool, cycle or take transit to work, instead of driving a car?
If carpooling or taking transit doesn’t work for you, participants can drive a hybrid vehicle, check their tire pressure, or get a tune-up to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions during the event.
Smart Commute Durham organizations taking part this year include: Veridian, Messier-Dowty, the City of Pickering and Durham Region.
To find out how you can take part, contact smartcommute@durham.ca or go to www.cleanaircommute.ca.
Cyclists take note!
